Hand dishwashing follows a simple sequence: remove food, wash with a product labeled for hand dishwashing, rinse away residue, and dry the items. Hand dishwashing liquid is not a substitute for automatic dishwasher detergent.
Step-by-step
Scrape food first
Remove leftover food from dishes and cookware. Check any item that needs special handling before placing it in water.
Wash with a hand-dishwashing product
Use a clean sink or dishpan and follow the detergent label for the amount and method. Change wash water when it becomes dirty.
Rinse thoroughly
Use clean water to remove suds and residue, including inside cups and bowls.
Dry and clean the station
Air-dry on a clean rack or use a clean towel. Clean the sink and allow reusable cloths and sponges to dry.
