What to do
Musty or “kulob” laundry needs a process check: sort loads, use detergent as directed, dry items fully, and maintain the washer. Fragrance alone does not establish that the cause has been removed.
Step-by-step
Review the incoming load
Keep damp items from remaining in a closed pile and separate pieces by fabric and care label. Note whether the odor is present before or after washing.
Check detergent and load size
Use a detergent and dose appropriate to the machine, fabric, and soil level. Avoid assuming that adding more detergent improves a poorly rinsing load.
Dry items completely
Move washed items to a suitable drying process promptly and make sure they are fully dry before storage or packaging.
Maintain the washer
Check the washer maker’s cleaning and ventilation instructions, including the door and seal of a front-load machine when applicable.
